Track warranties so you actually use them
Most warranty claims are lost because nobody remembered the warranty existed.
Warranties only help if you remember them before you pay for a repair. A simple list with end dates makes sure you check first.
The warranty list
- Item, purchase date and where you bought it
- Warranty length and end date
- What it covers (parts, labor, both)
- Whether registration was required, and if you did it
- Where the receipt is
Check these before paying for a repair
- The manufacturer's warranty
- An extended warranty or protection plan you bought
- Your credit card benefits, as some cards extend warranties on purchases (check your card's terms)
- A builder warranty if your home is new
- A home warranty contract, if you have one
Set a reminder
Put a calendar reminder a month before each important warranty ends, so you can get anything checked while it's still covered.
