A 20-minute subscription audit

Find and cancel the subscriptions you forgot about.

4 min read

Streaming services, apps, storage plans, delivery memberships: small monthly charges add up. A quick audit twice a year usually finds something to cancel.

Steps

  1. Download the last three months of card and bank statements.
  2. Highlight every recurring charge.
  3. For each one, ask: did we use it last month?
  4. Cancel what you don't use, through the service's own account settings.
  5. Note renewal dates for annual plans on your bills calendar.

Also check

  • App store subscriptions on each phone in the house
  • Free trials that turned into paid plans
  • Duplicate services (two music or two cloud storage plans)

If a service makes cancelling hard

Keep a record of when and how you cancelled. If charges continue, contact your card issuer and dispute them. Federal and state rules on cancelling subscriptions vary and change, so check the FTC's consumer pages for the current rules.
