Build a household bills calendar
Every bill, due date and payment method on one page, so nothing is late.
Late fees and missed payments usually come from bills that arrive once or twice a year, or from a payment method that quietly expired. A bills calendar puts everything in view.
List every bill
- Housing: mortgage or rent, HOA dues, property tax (if not in escrow)
- Utilities: electric, gas, water, sewer, trash, internet, phone
- Insurance: home, auto, life, umbrella
- Subscriptions and memberships
- Once-a-year items: car registration, professional dues, software renewals
For each one, note
- Due date and amount (or typical range)
- How it's paid: autopay, online, check
- Which account or card it's paid from
- Who in the house handles it
Keep it current
Review the calendar once a quarter and whenever a card is replaced. A replaced card is one of the most common reasons autopay quietly fails.
